And no I haven’t given birth to a baby elephant, but launching this Substack has certainly felt like it. It’s been a very long time coming; almost as long as the gestation period for an elephant - a whopping 22 months.
Imagine being pregnant for nearly two years. That’s pretty much how I’ve been feeling about giving birth to this newsletter - pregnant with anticipation, fearful of the outcome and frankly bloody uncomfortable. As Maya Angelou said:
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
And it was agony. But why, when setting up a Substack literally takes no time at all? Well that’s easy. I got in my own way. Procrastinated endlessly. Fretted about what I ‘should’ write about and the usual ‘would anyone even be interested?’ question. All familiar refrains, just ugly potholes on the road to success.
So here it is, after two courses on newsletter-writing and a Substack Masterclass with Farrah Storr I’m finally launching my own and really hope you’ll join me, get ‘Ultra Social’ and join the conversation.
But what am I signing up for and what exactly is Ultra Social? Well firstly, it’s what I called my business because it’s both what I am and what I do. And secondly, I wanted a place to share all the stuff that makes us human and this is it. Somewhere to share what we’ve all been learning in this adventure called life.
If this sounds a little woolly, sorry but I promised myself I’d get my first proper post out there and if I don’t do it, I may be pregnant for another two years. Check out my About page for a little more detail. More to come when I work it out but essentially it can be summed up like this:
“Instructions for living a life.
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.”

Please sign up and tell a friend if you think they might like to join us. Thank you so much and I hope to see you again soon. Sue x
Well done for launching! You write beautifully. I look forward to the next one. Hopefully, like births, the second one will be easier!
How exciting! The algorithm told me you were here. Good luck! Looking forward to seeing how this develops.
